Master-Class: Day 5 - Aerodynamics & Tuning

Moscow - The First Glimpse

My first impression of Moscow is that it is a gray and grumpy place, the same result you'd get if you took the whole population of Australia and deprived them of their sun, their mangoes, their oceans and beaches and forced them into a huge, underground city.

I was delighted, then, to actually met some nice and lively people today. It was no surprise, however, that they were talking about emigrating somewhere else:)

The Part Of My Heart...

...is missing.

I miss people I love. On the one hand I even don't have time to miss: so many things are in my head, so many things I have to do. But then I stop for a moment and feel very strongly how much I miss them.  We have an expression in Russian: "Tearing something off from the heart." Usually we use it when we want to convey that we give away something which is very important for us, which is part of our heart.  This is exactly how it feels. Whether I leave my family after visiting them in Kazakhstan, or I leave my boyfriend in Europe, or my dearly loved friends, I feel as I'm tearing off some part of my heart. I know that when there is love there are no distances. But this knowledge doesn't help. It is painful and sad anyway. Hey, people I love, why are you all in the different parts of the planet? Now I don't have any other choice but to travel around all the time:)

Paragliding. On The Frontline.

И... и... и...
The news we are receiving here are like reports from the front. Not so long ago I was told about the accident with the Kazakh female pilot Elena Savina, who is not taking part in the World Championship now, as she broke her hip during the competition in Fiesch and now she is having an operation in Switzerland. Another accident happened with Corinna, who injured her knee after an unsuccessful take off in Tegelberg.

The Paragliding World Championship was canceled because of the death of two pilots on the same day. Also, there were 12 chute deployments during those two days, but I believe they probably would not have objected so much to those deployments if two pilots had not been killed.

And what scares me is not even about how the paragliding sport is dangerous. What scares me even more is how the paraglider pilots had become so complacent about the chute deployments, how normal it is for them.

I am quoting one of the female pilots who flew in the Paragliding Worlds 2011:

Now about those accidents. The first pilot was killed right in front of my eyes. Actually I was the one who had to report his fall. Due to the tricky weather conditions that day (strong winds, as always, and a ceiling no higher than 100 meters above the tops of hills), all our huge crowd had to "lick" slopes at the low altitudes. It was quite turbulent because of the strong cross winds. The Argentinian pilot on his 8th Boomerang flew right underneath me. He was at about a hundred meters above the slope. Full frontal collapse. The pilot did take some action, but continued to fall with the opened wing. Near the ground the wing spun and pilot hit a huge rock in the rotation. The hit was so strong that it threw his body over the stone. Everywhere around there were bushes and only a meter to the left or to the right could save his life ((((. Most importantly: if he would have thrown his chute, he would most likely would have survived...

... My chute deployment was also due to complete frontal collapse in a rotary area at low altitude. Remembering what happened to the first pilot, I didn't try to open the wing but immediately threw the chute. At first I could not even throw it away, so turbulent it was, but then somehow I dragged it back in and dropped the chute down. Apparently, near the ground the chute opened and let me hit the ground with the protection of my harness. So, I am okay.

Did you understand, that the pilot just saw how the other competitor hit the ground and died. So she reported to the organizers and continue to fly the task. Well, closer to the goal line she also had to throw her chute, which, thank God, opened and saved her.

She continue to fly a task, and it is normal for them, you see?

She continue to fly not because there's nowhere to land. No, it is just some pilots fall, but the competition continues. You have to take yourself and your nerves in your hands and continue to fly.

It is like a war. Where there are no winners.

Raise The Bar

It happens in life quite often. But sometimes, when you want it to happen, it is unclear how to make it work.

I was attending my dance lessons, and we were studying some complicated moves. We fell sometimes, it was painful, and we couldn't seem to make it work. Everything seemed understandable from a theoretical point of view, but something was missing in applying the theory to the movement of our bodies. Our instructor reassured us that no one is successful from the first attempt, because the movements are really difficult to do.

Then I had a long break (I was in Australia). When I returned, I was placed in a new group with a new instructor. We were practicing a new dance, which sometimes had moves so complex which, I thought, I could not accomplish. But this instructor had a different attitude. She simply said: "It's easy! Just do like this and like this. You see? And, the most important thing, don't forget to stretch your leg more elegantly. More elegance!"

And while we were trying to dance more elegantly, somehow, without really noticing it, we were doing all of those complex moves. It is just that we had raised the bar. There never was a question, can we do that or not. Of course we can. Now the main thing was to do everything smoother and more beautifuly. You understand?

It's is always like this. Everything depends on perception, on attitude, on where we set the bar for ourselves.

I remember another funny story.

Three years ago I started my hanggliding competitive life: for the first time I went to the international competitions in Europe. I was riding all over Europe with the Russian national team for more than two months. I was not in the team (I was quite a beginner then), but I was traveling with the best Russian pilots, and I was staying with them, eating with them, listening their stories, rigging up gliders at the launch together with them, and flew the same tasks.

Without noticing it, I began to think that I am one of them, one of those good pilots. One day I was the last one in the goal, I was sitting there under my wing and wondering, why I fly so slow. And then I had an insight: Girl! You never made goal before! Before this trip you were simply glad to not bomb out right after the take off! You were happy to take more than one turnpoint! Look at you now. Instead of struggling to not bomb out, you are busy with finding the best position in the start gate. Now you don't look for a landing field around the first turnpoint, because you are heading to goal. Maybe very slowly, but you are flying to goal... Being among the national team gave me so different attitude.

The bar was raised and I stepped up to it without realizing it! The surrounding people and the surrounding circumstances help you with that. You don't even pay much attention to something, which was very hard before, when you are on the way to the higher goal.

There's nothing you can do that can't be done?
I wonder, how can we raise our bar ourselves? How can we break through the inversion of our brain and go to the next level? Will everything will come of it's own accord when the time is right? There's nothing you can do that can't be done, so relax, don't hit the wall too hard and everything will come? Or schedule a greater goal and ongoing goal will be settled by itself:)?

Sydney -> Beijing -> Moscow -> Chelyabinsk

Loooong flight back home. On the way to OZ I could not believe that I was really going to be there: so thrilling and exciting it was to even think about it. On the way back I couldn't believe that it was really going to come to an end. Then - bang! - and you wake up inside the world, which you had been looking down at for a long while. Looking down from high high altitudes...

I remember the first summer when we were learning how to fly. We used to stay in tents right next to our training hill in Askarovo. We had been staying there quite a long time, more than a month. We were cooking on a fire and bathed in a river. And we flew, flew... There were moments when, in the evening, you sit on the top of the hill, tired and happy, and you are at peace with all the world. And you look down at the world from a hundred meters up. And you watch some villages and cities, full of people, people, people. They are busy, busy, busy. They are solving their problems. Experience some life dramas. Get hurt and get happy. Worry and fuss. And you sit up there and think that in reality problems do not exist. That everything is so easy and simple. All you have to do is just climb a mountain and look down. Then everything becomes sooo clear. And all the city fuss is no more important than vanity in an anthill.

And then all of a sudden you wake up inside an "anthill". And you realize that now you have to climb up back for so long. Oh, so long. And it looks like now you must fuss as well, to get back upstairs. Right?

Hmmm... maybe I have to come back to my training hill, climb up and look at the world from above to get my peace back.

Choice

In a situation when you have a choice:
to change everything
or to leave it as it is,
you might be surprised to find that it is safer
(yes yes, exactly safer)
to choose change.

Because if you have already reached the stage when you are forced to choose,
sooner or later, changes will come anyway,
but then it will drag you by your hair with your face in the dirt,
and with a gun at your head.

When you could just walked by yourself, with your own legs,
despite all your laziness, of course.
(No one says: "laziness", they always find other excuses, but we know the truth).

So, there you have it. That's the rule.

I wouldn't say that I like this rule.
But it works.

Trees On The Roof

"There are some odd trees which grow on the balconies of empty apartments and even on a building's roof, directly on the tile. They grow in the accumulation of dust and bird droppings. They can grow quite large, by the way. Not all of them. Just some.

Sometimes I think that these trees on the balconies or roofs are like a story about us. Well, about me and my "birds of a feather". We are such trees on the roofs.

We have grown up in the places where it is impossible to grow, with no real purpose, because for trees there are other better places to flourish: forests, groves, parks, gardens and, perhaps, courtyards. And we, the fools, for some reason are growing on roofs, without fertile soil, without a sense of the land under our feet (because there is nothing to sense: there is really no soil there).

And it's not that we chose to grow there. It just happened. We, of course, can not be imitated. Who would want to imitate us, actually? The trees that have grown on solid, fertile soil, where they should? Why would they want to imitate us? And our neighbors - television antennas - are very unlikely to turn green, being inspired by our example, even if they really wanted to.

We don't know for what purpose we exist. However, the question is not "for what", the question is "why." Why? We exist merely because once some seeds drifted with the wind onto the roof. So we just had to grow now.

And we are not "for something." We are "without reason."

Well, sometimes a passerby throws back his head to the sky, sees us, awkward, and gasps: "Awesome!"

Let's think that this is our mission: to make citizens say "wow".

We should not exist, in theory, but we already do and will continue to do so for some time - awkward, ridiculous, beautiful, like life itself.

Needless to say, I love us - could it be different? But that's another story."

A Few Good Men

Recently I've watched "A Few Good Men," a 1992 drama directed by Rob Reiner. I liked this movie and I would recommend it. Everyone will see something different in it. As for me, I was impressed by the courage of some people in defending what they believe.

As for my most favorite movies, I really like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Interstate 60", "August Rush"... But those are other stories...

Magic

I clearly remember the time when I was learning how to fly the Dragonfly. I remember almost every one of Bobby's words, I remember every day, I know by heart the approach from either side of the Quest airfield, I remember all the lakes around and the view of alligators from above. I remember all of those feelings: how to hold the stick, at what angle to hold it, and where I will I end up with such an angle. Everything of this is in my memory, so bright and so clear... Clouds: views from above, from the bottom, from inside... Getting closer and closer to the real sense of "feeling" this new kind of flight with a motor.

Most of all I loved three things: 1) playing with the clouds; 2) when Bobby or Rhett would fly very low over the landscape; 3) and the landings. For me, landing was always something appealing, attractive, and captivating. You have to have the maximum possible concentration and a perfect sense of the wings to land it so smooth that a passenger would not feel any bumps. Sliding over the ground, the wheels are touching the grass millimeters by millimeter... Wow. I was really swept away by this!

When I was allowed to fly alone and could take Dragonfly whenever I chose - believe me, I chose very often. I was spinning in my bed during the night and waiting for the morning like a kid waits for Christmas. I started up the motor in the cool morning stillness, before the night's clouds has disipated and a mist still hovered one meter above the ground.

And I flew. In the morning silence. In the clouds. Screaming with delight. When I am alone - I can let myself scream:). I was waiting for every flight as if this flight would be a new fairy tale. And each flight really was a new fairy tale. These are the moments of life when you live "here and now". And these moments in reality last forever.

Fairy tale

I remember when I was learning to fly a hangglider. We didn't really need then any nice video about beautiful flights in the beautiful mountains. We didn't need new bright-colored trendy hanggliders and helmets. There was no need of promising stories about how cool it will be in the future. The only thing I needed was to get to the weekend as soon as possible. We had waist-deep snowbanks and temperatures down to -19C sometimes, old gliders, and the theory, written on the blackboard in chalk. For a long time I thought the highest skill I could attain would be to ridge soar a 300 meter high ridge on the old, gray glider.

But all this was not important. The fact that this was the most real WINGS ever - this was more important than anything else. The fact that I can run and push off the ground was more important than anything, whether it was my university, classes, exams, jobs, boys (sorry guys), or some other plans for the future. At that time it was also not important, what could be achieved with this sport and how far could I fly really. My delight was the same as Lilienthal's, I suppose; that flight was actually possible for human beings. I lived from one weekend to the next. I could go to fly being sick with a body temperature up to 39C and then come back absolutely healthy. I remember every hole on the training hill on the way up. I remember the view of the birch trees on our training hill from above, the long long flat slope and strawberries on the eastern flank. I know which song should be sung to change the wind direction to the ideal one for us - western. I clearly remember my first ridge soaring. And the second. And the third. And I remember every instructor (a low bow to you all!) I ever had. And all these pictures are forever ingrained in my memory. I think flying either does not touch you at all, or it captures you entirely. And then the more you fly, the more you want to fly.

Carrying the glider up the mountain. Anya is helping.

Early morning, waiting for our instructor.

And I recall another magic, which also affected whole my life. I was 12 years old and we began our programming lessons at school. Our computers were old Russian ones with only 64 KB of RAM, no graphic interface, black monitor and interpreter program for QBasic. And I remember how after a long but exciting struggle I wrote my first program: it was a snowflake (*), which was drifting across the screen for a given trajectory. Nothing was more surprising to me then. I wrote just a few lines and now snowflakes were appearing on the screen. Just a few commands in English have become a dancing snowflake. Do you understand the significance of the moment? Here are all these notorious bits, bytes and chips which understood commands in English and became a snowflake on the screen, which obeyed my will. It was like a kind of fiction.

So, that's how I became a programmer. Because it was a kind of magic. Now I am writing algorithmic trading systems - we call them robots. That means that I just write some commands, just the words, which suddenly turn into robots, which are not just an exercise in logic displayed on a screen, but also producing actions with actual bank accounts, real money, and sometimes they make mistakes just like a human being. And this is not as surprising to me as it was with that little snowflake drifting around the screen:)

Teachers checking my program at a programing contest. Behind me is my teacher, Andrey Aleksandrovich, who taught me almost everything I know about computer science during my school studies.

So, now comes the reason why I wrote such a long entry and didn't split it in parts. There is one thing in common in all these magical events: we live so fully in those times, with all our heart, with all our soul.

So, I came to the conclusion that HAPPINESS is simply when you do something WITH ALL YOUR HEART. So easy.

I Like This Phrase:)

You will have more success in life
when you get more comfortable with being uncomfortable.

News

My nephew is growing by leaps and bounds. As for me, he is very cute:) His mother, with sleepy eyes and tired hands, is trying to convince me that there is nothing more wonderful in the world than being a mom.

Olga tells me that Chelyabinsk is having problems with the city lights. And she's going to fix it. She also said that in Yekaterinburg they shut down all the lights in the city during the night to save money. Therefore you're never sure if you are in or out of the town, it's so dark. So, dear friends living in Yekaterinburg, Olga will come to you one day:)!

Mitya returned to our hanggliding club and immediately started to train new students. I can't even begin to tell you how good this is. First of all, Mitya is a talanted pilot who hasn't flown for a while but now returned to the fold. Secondly, our students have a new instructor:).

Lena tells the story of how the war between the Kyrgyz and Uzbeks is going in Kyrgyzstan now. She met one Uzbek, who was riding on the train far far far away from home to St. Petersburg to earn money. He needs money to buy a gun and immediately return. Back. To the war. This is his reality while we are worried about how to buy a glider or pay a debt... Here is just - gun and go ahead! And no questions about life.

My friend Zhenya started breeding cherry shrimps at her workplace. The shrimps are very young and not responding to their names yet. But Zhenya misses them when she is not at work and probably very soon she will also say that there is nothing more beautiful in the world than being a mom:)

Julia continues to travel around Europe and plans to go further and travel across all the continents. And she always invites anyone to join her. This time she is inviting me to go with her to Spain:)

Nikita is selling his car and wants to buy a new one. On the question "why this car now?" he answers - "well, this car is three centimeters longer then yours!"

Olesya brings foreigners to the schools so they could talk to the children with their native English. Normally, all students are inspired and very interested to see foreign people. But there are schools in the suburbs, where children are not interested in anything at all except some beer after school time. And after they finish their school, they go to the factory, just as their parents did, and will work there all their lifetime. And there isn't any inspiration in their eyes or any questioning of life. Almost better to take a gun and go to Kyrgyzstan.

Ilya is working on his dissertation. He wrote about 20% of his work during the last couple of years, I think. And now there is only one month and 80% left! Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen!

And what kind of news do I have? Hm. Instead of buying a house with a pool near the ocean, and getting married and giving birth to two children, I spend a weekend LIKE THIS. Yes, there is a time to fly and have fun, and there is a time to work. And now it is definetely not the first case:)

That's It, Baby

So, I'm in Chelyabinsk, and, as usual, the Earth started to spin much faster: so many jobs, thoughts, projects, businesses, ideas and so little time... It seems like visiting Europe gives me a magic invisible kick of additional power, energy and creativity.

They say body and soul travel separately. Body just enters the plane and - bang! - only in several hours it is already in another world, kind of a teleportation from flying life to everyday life. But the soul... the soul can not do like this. It hangs with all the forces of all legs for what remains behind. And then slowly, under the pressure of an attractive force, it begins to move towards a destination, while the body is wondering why is it all so strangely sad and lonely, empty and meaningless, and actually why it is so horribly cold and rainy in Chelyabinsk? Feels like the body would prefer to be a wolf and howl at the moon, or to be a bear and hibernate, or at least to be a cat and snuggle up under a warm blanket... And after a week has passed, the soul finally arrives at the destination, and everything falls into place. Ok. Completed. Ready to work, to live, to laugh, to move ahead.

Yes, despite that all the issues with my soul are resolved, my heart is still not here, and isn't even going to be.

Slovenian Open - Task 2

Winds were quite strong today and in the launch area it was nothern, which means rotors on the take off. Lift was better than yesterday, cloud base was still lower than higher mountains. They set a 69 kilometer task with four turnpoints.

The day winners were Suan Selenati, Franc Peternel and Primoz Gricar.

We took of in rotor conditions. No, it is not that scary, nobody crashed, though almost all take-offs were rather pitiful. And one had to look for the first thermal exactly in the turbulent rotor. It is when first you have wild lifting up and right after - falling down without any air under your wings. No, it is not that scary, it is ok. Nobody forced pilots to fly into that rotor! Pilots could just turn around and fly to the landing field instead!!!;)

Actually, usually I can handle turbulent rotor. And if it is really important, I can handle flying with the crowd. But to handle crowd in the rotor....:(....

I was flying and thinking: if somebody would ask me now why I fly, I wouldn't answer that I just love to feel myself like a bird. Neither is it that I love this freedom of flying, nor that it is just so easy and a happy thing - to fly. If somebody would ask me during THAT flight why right now I am STILL flying, I would answer that we probably just need to be challenged. We want to explorer our own fears even when it is really hard, such as when we are very afraid but keep trying. We give up, run away, turn around, and try again, just to overcome this stupid obstacle. Just to push our limits. To push our limits and not betray ourselves. What is so good, so appealing and attractive in it for us? I don't know.

Every flight is like a lifetime. Sometimes it is easy and funny, sometimes it is hard. And after all, on the landing field, you can start to cry, either because of the frustration after you gave up again and betrayed some part of yourself again, or because of the relief after you didn't give up...overcame something and made a new step in your self-development.

To Want Or Not To Want

It made me smile
Now seriously.
I recall my interest in Eastern philosophy, Buddhism, Zen, Osho. The wise parables about totality, intensity, awakening, contemplation and unity with the world. Such beautiful and right words and feelings.

I stumbled on the chapter about desires.
"You are chasing every desire, and you do it again and again and again and you get disappointed again. Each wish brings suffering, and there is no fulfillment of wishes. You never reach anything, and satisfaction is not possible. Only when you stop, the travel disappears. When the desire doesn't obscure your mind anymore, you are inside. This is called the conversion inside."

And then I realized that it turns out that the whole of our purpose here is to stop going anywhere, stop wanting and just watch. And then everything inside me rebelled. How?? To lie on the couch and never want anything? And do not move? Not at all?? And what about all the world around me? What about all the mountains, what about flying, what about love?

Then I sighed and closed the Osho's parables. And for the first time in my life I went to Europe, to fly in the Alps. For the whole summer. It was in 2008.
I decided that everything needs balance. Including the relation between "to contemplate" and "to want".

And what about the highest truth of the "wanting-nothing" - I will probably grow up enough to understand it in the next life...

And now I so much wish I were there with you in Europe now!!! You, all the lucky ones who fly now in Spain :)!!!

The NOT Word

My mom never forbade me to smoke. To drink or swear was also never prohibited.
I am 26 years old and I have never tried smoking. And I don't swear, and although I could do that, I just never wanted to. And I tried vodka for the first time only two months ago at the funeral of my close friend.

I recall a situation from my early childhood (when I still had baby teeth and the trees were higher): my mother, sister and myself were coming back home and we had met at the entrance the teenaged daughter of our neighbor and her friends. They were a little tipsy, hiding from their parents, talking with a kind of teenage swearing slang, and smoking. The girl was normally well-behaved, but apparently the company and the age affected her.
My mom told us then with the very hopeless and sad voice: "Eh, you will also grow and become THE SAME". I still remember. I had such an absolute unwillingness to grow up THE SAME.

It is just that my friend Zhenya told me the other day that there is a theory, according to which one shouldn't ever use the word NOT to a child. One should always look for another way to say it and never forbid anything. For instance, instead of "Don't step across the road alone!" you would have to say "Step acroos the road only together with the adult". Or instead of "Don't lick your dirty shoes" you would have to say "Clean and disinfect them first, and then you can lick them as long as you want!" Certainly, one would have to train his brain a lot to never use NOT. But then your child will never want to break a ban. Because there are no bans.

I have no idea if this theory would work or not. Probably, but there are no children who were brought up like this so far. And I am not sure, how they would live later in a society, which uses the word NOT.

My sister never smoked as well, by the way.

Myself with my mom and my sister Sasha. I love them so much:)

Montage

Meanwhile, I am home, in Chelyabinsk, two weeks already. Submersed in a million problems after arriving, I am working, dealing, solving.

Sometimes you want just to close your eyes and open them only when everything gets better. Like a video montage, film editing. But in the end it always turns out that the film, the real action, is exactly this way from the very beginning of the history to its happy ending. Otherwise there never would have been any fairy tales, they would have looked like this: "Once upon a time there lived Cinderella, she married the Prince and lived happily ever". Nothing interesting at all.

Winston Churchill

Some quotes I like:

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts."

"Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things."

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

"You have enemies. Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life."

Two Different Penalties

  • Penalty for one of the biggest cases of environmental damage - $69 million.
  • Penalty for the illegal downloading of music by teenagers - $1 billion.
