Advanced Master class in Greifenburg

Day 1. Gerolf in front of the main Alpine chain.

From the 18th to the 24th of August, Gerolf and I conducted our third and last flying course for this year, this time for “topless” pilots who already fly XC for a while, but want to experience the potential of Austrian Alpine mountain flying and log in a few really cool scenic flights.

Right from the very first flight, one could feel the advanced level of the pilots. On that day, the weather conditions in Greifenburg were particularly good: the ceiling was 3700 meters (the landing field at the campground is 600 meters), with almost no wind. Gerolf set up a beautiful task, introducing the area to the pilots (red line on the map)....

None of the participants had ever flown over so serious a level of mountains; with 3000 meter high snowy peaks passing under their bellies, surrounded by the surreal beauty of mountain lakes. Their delight knew no bounds.
Even though all the participants were "first timers," the first day of the master-class was an unusual task; both the first day of flying in the real mountains and the first day of flying in a team of pilots that they have never met before. Despite all these challenges, the group impressed us with their abilities. Quick launch, waiting for each other in start gate(!), harmonious group flying for a long while, and most of the group made goal!

If we had been given such a good weather in the second half of the master class, Gerolf no doubt would have sent us to the other side of the Alps over the main Alpine chain. But on the first day we can not do such experiments. First we need to get to know each pilot’s level and to familiarize them with the terrain. Gerolf’s task covered all the objectives! Also, this is one of the most beautiful possible tasks in the Greifenburg area.

Again we were quite lucky with the weather conditions. Our schedule for this course had resembled our previous courses: in the middle of the week, we had a front passing through, so we devoted that day to rest and theory. All other days were flyable. In Greifenburg we had four flights; a 102K survey task to the main Alpine chain with a return to the camp (red line on the map), a 70K flight to the east to the lake and the castle of Ossiach over Hohe Leier ridge and on to another beautiful body of water, lake Millstatter (pink line on the map), and two local flights, one of which was a failed attempt (because of the after-front difficult conditions) to fly over Lienz Dolomites (blue line of the map).

One of the days we flew in Lienz, launching from the Zettersfeld ridge. The cloudbase was low, and the whole flight took place to the side of the clouds, both diving below and surfacing above them, flying between valleys and canyons of clouds. The task was to jump over to the back ridge and to have a look at Wagenitzsee, another blue-black mountain lake. Not a long task, but breathtaking.

One time we flew in Gemona, in the Julian Alps. The sky was overcast, stealing the bright colors from the Italian landscape. Despite the cu’s popping up here and there, it was hard for Gerolf to convince the pilots that the weather was good and that a 70K task was feasible, one that would fly from Italy to Slovenia and back over a few turnpoint in the foothills.

Looking at the faded colors, I did not mount my gopro onto my hang glider, and - again! - later regretted that very much. It was not only that the whole task turned out completely passable, and we flew over this beautiful air highway to Slovenia and back, but also on the way I met a flock of vultures. Not just a flock but a great bulk of them! And not just met, but indefinitely hung in there with some circles with them, turning wing to wing, wing to tail, and even wing to beaks with hundreds of vultures. Surreal. It seems that Gerolf, flying ahead, had triggered that flock to take off (or provoked them to urgently start a flying course for their younger generation). Since I was flying one kilometer behind him, I got all that pleasure for free. Those shots (which are only kept in my memory) are the second most beautiful shots of the year for me, just behind the shots of my first and only conquest of the Grossglockner, Austria's highest point. Now you see how much I wished I had a camera!

Others had cameras and took quite a few nice shots there. But no vultures…

Joze, our Slovenian pilot, probably hurried up to Slovenia, flew low, and ended up landing on the border of Italy and Slovenia. I honestly thought there was no landings, but he found one! He had to wait for retrieve for quite a long time…

Here I could easily finish the story. All the rest you know. That Gerolf told and showed a lot of things...before the flight, in-flight and after the flight...at the briefings and during the dinners...on the road, in the car and with a cup of tea in the cafes. Each master class, he says something new; what the difference is in thermalling over dolomitic limestone mountains and over the granite rocks; when it is necessary to wait for the thermal in the certain place, and when one should not wait; even the different ways to mount a gopro camera on a hangglider and the settings of cameras were covered.

Pilots listening to Gerolf

Gerolf tries to give pilots what they really need, something most of them don’t even really know. They might think that they have a problem with thermalling since they can’t get up near the launch, that their hangglider has a bad glide, or that their hang loop is way too long. The truth, they are surprised to learn, might be that they had broken balancing system in their harnesses (as much as three pilots had this!) , or that they do not know how to properly leave a thermal or how to keep himself calm after the take off. They think that they have a problem with motivation, but the problem is that they have a high heart rate (read: stress). Gerolf didn’t just lecture and didn’t just show "how to do.” He comes up with situations in which the pilot himself has to live through and understand. Sometimes Gerolf lets them make mistakes a pilot would better understand. And they do understand, indeed. And don’t forget it later. I love Gerolf, he is a wonderful teacher.

Meanwhile we continue to gather statistics on our pilots’ heart rates in flights. Interesting facts: first, everyone is surprised how high their heart rate jumps, especially those who are very good at controlling heart rate during physical exercises (in jogging, for example). But what is even more surprising is how quickly attention to this problem and a periodic reminder to yourself to calm down can change the picture. Getting used to an area and glider also play an important role. But the ability to remain calm during the flight not only helps extends the flight longer, but also helps in making much better decisions.

Apart from all the positive aspects of this master class, there was one unfortunate episode. The "epic fail" happened to Igor from Tomsk, Russia. On the second day while crossing the valley at an altitude of about 2500 meters his reserve chute came off. This time from Tenax harness. Igor noticed it just in time, took a parachute in his hand, flew to the most dense cedar forest and threw his parachute there. Later we discussed that it would be better to try to shove a chute into the legs area and zip harness up - he had enough altitude for maneuvers. But... what happened happened. He softly crashed into the high tree, perfectly okay himself and almost without any damage on the glider. Then Igor with all his Siberian experience came down from the pine tree and told the rescue helicopter that suddenly appeared that he didn’t need help. When they then offered to help with getting the glider down, Igor agreed. Maybe that was not the best decision, as rescuers completely broke the glider and then invoiced Igor for 500 euros for their help, which is not covered by the insurance company.

Igor’s gopro’s battery died in flight, so that's just the takeoff picture:

After all, one thing I love in all those courses (in addition to an excellent teacher and stunning flying) is the people. I get a chance to go through trials, tribulations, even success and glories together, to live a bit of life together and get to know different people from many different cultures. And then miss them and therefore write all these posts here.

Introductory Master class in Greifenburg

From the 11th to the 17th of August, Gerolf and I conducted an introductory master class for beginner XC pilots, our first course for pilots at that level.

Beginners is not exactly the right word here. In our case, a beginner is someone who already flies XC (though not very far or fast), who most likely flies an intermediate king posted glider, which is an ideal tool for all the important lessons of learning to fly cross-country. Someone who already has had experience landing out, and is able to find a proper field and fit in. Who has already started to think about the effectiveness of his/her thermaling and gliding techniques, and also need a direction to work towards as well as the help of the more experienced pilots with flying in full-on mountainous terrain.

Gerolf originally did not plan to organize flying courses for inexperienced pilots; he wanted to find good company for serious flying in beautiful mountains. But where to find so many good pilots who have free time in the same time of the season and who are ready to join the course? Isn’t it more rewarding to help upcoming pilots to become better?
Also, for a growing pilot early in his flying career, it is such a good investment to learn from Gerolf who knows how to fly not only at the highest international level, but also knows how to explain and teach. So Gerolf decided that good company should not only be found but also raised.

It turned out to be a very good decision. We were really delighted with the group.

First of all, everyone eagerly soaked up everything Gerolf told them. If yesterday Gerolf explained to them why the ability to use a drogue chute is so important when flying in the Alps, today they all throw their drogue chutes on landing. They did not put it off for some time later, when the conditions on the landing field are simpler or the field is smaller or the wind is stronger. No. They did it right away.

If Gerolf explained how to make a proper landing approach, every time afterwards they tried to approach a field as correctly as possible, almost competing with each other for the best path. Many of them had to move out of their comfort zone and the habit of making a paraglider approach. And they did move out! As always when one leaves a comfort zone, it gave them a burst of learning, sanity, absorbency, and a thirst for further learning, which Gerolf and I thoroughly loved.

When Gerolf had explained to the pilots how to improve their launch techniques, they began to practice it the next day.
Correcting one’s launch technique is a very difficult task on its own. After leaving a beginner hill, pilots get so used to the way they learned to launch that correcting it, especially on a high mountain take off, is something only a few dare. Even a wrong and dangerous launch technique for many pilots is often preferable over trying something new. But fear of the new is what hinders any development.
Every day Gerolf gave very detailed explanations on how to take off correctly. Without loading the glider too much, but by just controlling the angle of attack and gradually sliding the hands down along the uprights. And they tried! Some launches became so beautiful and elegant (I'm not even saying how much more controlled and safe it became) that shots could be made for any movie or any magazine cover.

When Gerolf had set a task to the high ridge behind when the cloudbase was not so high, explaining, of course, what is dangerous and what is not, our pilots really flew the task. They did not try to find a million reasons why they can not do that, why they are afraid to fly low in the high mountains. They knew when and where they can leave and they flew there. With their king posted gliders, they flew much more beautiful, interesting, exciting and challenging flights than many of much more experienced pilots of topless wings.

This desire to learn and willingness to leave a comfort zone when it’s required, and this trust in Gerolf were amazing features of this group.

We were lucky with the weather conditions. It wasn’t until the fourth day of the master class that a huge front passed the Alps and we had a day of rest and theory. It was good, as the intense flying every day made pilots tired and we needed one day off. All the other days we flew, flew and flew.

Flights were not really long: 86 km, 60 km, 65 km, 70 km, and two local flights - one in Greifenburg, Austria, and another one in Meduno, Italy. Flights were not as big in kilometers, as they were big in hours flown, complexity, and beauty. Instead of adding more distance by flying along the valleys, these pilots have been learning to fly in the mountains.

Three years ago, Artur Dzamikhov and Anton Struganov, top Russian pilots, as well as myself followed Gerolf over those rear high ridges, overcoming fear, eager but with great anxiety. Now days our king-posted students happily fly there. I envy them! This is how the introductory flying should to start for everyone.

Something else that pleased me in that group is the number of questions asked and the amount of curiosity that was brought to the master class. Some of the pilots arrived with an impressive list of important questions, and the list was constantly being updated.

For the most part, the course followed our standard routine. Wake up early; briefing on the launch with the detailed explanation of the task, the most beautiful of what was possible and appropriate to the weather conditions; flight (a very short word, but the most important point!); happy reunion of the best pilots in goal; retrieve; debriefing in our apartment.

We flew over the vast lakes Millstatter See and Weissensee, and lots of small mountain lakes. Over Zettersfeld, Schleinitz, Rotstein, Tschiernock, Hohe Leier and, of course, above all the highest peaks of our home ridge.

Gerolf showed us new (for both me and the students) flying site in Italy called Meduno. We had a nice local flight there in ridge soaring and XC conditions, studied our gliders, relaxing in the air; some pilots were practicing basic aerobatics figures.

On the theoretical briefings, Gerolf told us all the latest theories of the hang gliding and sailplane worlds, and of how the thermals look. Not the simple, standard, and so often not working models of columns of warm air, which get tilted by wind, but more complex and detailed model of bubbles in bubbles. He also told us how to distinguish dangerous clouds from non-dangerous ones and how to use safe ones.

With the help of gps-loggers, gopro cameras, heart rate monitors, and, most importantly, the observations in the air, Gerolf studied and criticized the flying technique of individual pilots.
There was a lot of things to improve, of course. From flying skills to flying equipment. What also differs beginners from more experienced pilots is the ignorance of the technical aspects, the inability to adjust and prepare their own equipment.

Half of the pilots flew without either sun or wind goggles, not realizing how much it hurts their eyes. Not always GPSs had mounts. Harnesses were often not properly adjusted.
One pilot flew incorrectly assembled glider for one and a half season! We noticed the problem when we saw that the radius of his circle while thermaling is too big for such a wing and wing loading. Gerolf found a problem, fixed, the radius got smaller, thermaling efficiency came up right away. The pilot is happy.

Before and After: diameter 80-110 meters VS 45-75 meters.
Gopro-cameras, mounted to our students’ gliders were filming most of the screw ups. The most epic screw up for the entire course was the chute which fell out of the chute pocket of one of our pilots right before the landing. Turned out that pilot had this situations twice before but he always thought it was the pin which was not tight enough in. No, he was wrong, and the Gopro camera showed him and us the whole truth.

Given all the mistakes made, this made the progress the students made all the more impressive. Many have been growing by leaps and bounds. I can not speak for them, but from our own observations, we could see how much more conscious decisions became, and how much more confident the flying was. It gives us so much more pleasure to organize such master classes. Thank you, guys and girls!

I personally had a new experience of constant translation from English into Russian and back to those Russian pilots who had poor English. On the one hand, this was a lot of work. On the other hand, I was forced to be every second in “here and now”, to listen to Gerolf very carefully and understand exactly what he wants to convey. Only then I realized how often in everyday life and during our previous workshops I missed those thoughts which I thought were irrelevant for myself at the moment, and how many interesting things I left behind. I was very pleased that I had to penetrate into every detail , and I learned a lot. I wish all pilots would listen to Gerolf, not filter, and listen carefully to everything. He is not telling anything, which you would not need.
And to those pilots who do not speak English, I would recommend to use the winter to good use and learn the language. If you want to develop as a pilot and want to fly in the Alps, you must realize speaking English is a necessary skill of a good pilot.

Another interesting experience is a recruitment the group. This is a whole different subject . For one particular master class we want to recruit a group of pilots with more or less similar skills. This way nobody falls behind, the group becomes very dynamic, Moyesmurf goes to different pilots (about Moyesmurf later), and all the pilots take the most out of the course.
If one pilot’s skills are far not as good as all other pilots in a group, in the evening the weaker pilot will have to sadly observe his friends, actively discussing the task and the mountains, which he never saw.
But to estimate the level of the pilots just from mailing back and forth is not such an easy task. As it turns out, you can not always believe the pilot’s assessment of his own level , and you can not always believe even their instructor’s evaluation.
This time we were lucky. Only one pilot fell behind the group with his flying (actually, launching) skills, he would need a simpler course. There was also one who could have take part in a more advanced course though he seemed to be happy with this one, too. The others flew so well together, so amicably helping each other, filming each other, motivating each other. It was pleasure to watch.

Flying Moyesmurf is our award for the best flight of the day, which Gerolf gives to one of the pilots every day. Here are our winners:
