Forbes - Task 2 - 179 km
I didn't have internet for a while. So, better late than never...
The weather forecast was not really good. Strong winds, low cloud base, and rains over Forbes at 2 pm already. Therefore they set an early task: launch was opened in 11:15 already and we had to fly to Monia Gap, which is 179 kilometers to the West, as far from the rain as we could.
Most of the time we had to fly over the area without any good roads because of the restricted airspace to the north from our course line. Poor pilots, who landed out there - they had experienced heavy rain, while waiting for their retrieve!

I was almost the last one in the launch line, so I was just in time for the last start gate. Oh, well. Good chance to fix mistakes from the day before and to learn how to thermal properly with the wind.
Aha. I was trying to correct my thermaling by flying longer against the wind. I remember, I was always thinking I am doing good. But when I looked at my tracklog in the evening, I was surprised: one would not see any of my attemtps:) Looks like I really underestimate my drift with the wind! I have to react faster, to turn tighter, to fly longer against the wind!
Ha, I didn't know I am that slow:)
Actually, I quite liked my flight. But after flying all the way over the mostly shadowed landscape I finally have met some sunny spots, and got slow with the next decision where the next thermal would be. Didn't find it and landed. Made only 118 kilometers.
- в ветренные дни протягивать против ветра увереннее;
- лететь на переходах быстрее;
Short note for myself:
- when thermaling and it is windy, fly longer against the wind;
- don't stay for too long in weak thermals;
- fly faster than the best glide speed.
Steve Blenkinsop won the day, 31 pilots made goal. After we left the Forbes airfield, it rained there, and then front was following us with dark dark clouds, heavy rain and lightning. We passed through the front on the way back, safely inside our car.
So, that's just two short flights for me. Two tasks where I landed out after flying less than 3 hours. My muscles want more! It is not enough exercise!

Forbes - Steve Hocking Challenge - Task 1 - 185 km
The sky was overcast from the very begining, just shadow everywhere, while we had a 185 kilometers task to the little town called Grong Grong. But I felt quite good somehow: I was glad to have a chance to fly in difficult conditions. I didn't care if I bomb out. I just wanted to learn more about thermaling on a windy overcast day. And I wanted to fly alone and to try my best in understanding how all this works.

And I wanted to fly alone and to try my best in understanding how all this works.
It turned out to be really tricky. I even thought that I forgot how to thermal. Just when you think that you've just found the core - bang! - and you've lost it! After the flight many pilots were complaining that the thermals were not easy at all, but during the flight I thought that I am really hopeless.
But here is the difference between good pilots and just pilots. All the good pilots made goal! While I landed out at the turnpoint, making only 94 kilometers.
Here is an important thought for myself: you always have to know where the next thermal is and to where you are flying now. This method almost always works. But if you get distracted, or if you fly just above the road or just hope that thermal will find you by itself, then very often you will end up having to look for a landing field.
Jonny won the day. Results can be found HERE. 23 pilots out of 58 pilots who launched made goal. A young kiwi Jonas Lobitz also made goal, but he missed the turnpoint, because he put wrong the radius in his GPS. Oh, that hurts! Especially after such a hard task.
So, I am learning, learning...

Forbes - Craig Worth Open - Results
So, the first Forbes competition, the Craig Worth Open is over. I think, it is quite cool to have two competitions in Forbes this year: if you screwed up the first comp, you still have a chance to win the second one:)! After the rest day, one could see many pilots fresh and ready to fly long tasks:)

Forbes - Task 3 - 318 km!
That was a lot of fun to see the excited faces of the pilots, when they came to the morning briefing and saw our task board:

318 kilometers to well known Hay. Three hundred eighteen! With a tail wind, but not a strong one. Three hundred eighteen! Most of the pilots have never flown so far. All the pilots were excited, nervous and feverish:) I liked the joke one of the pilots made: when Jonny had mentioned that there is a high antenna on the way to the goal field and we should be careful and not hit it, that pilot had added: "yeah, in the dark". Yes, it really felt that if we ever made this goal, it will be after the sunset:)

The launch opened at 11:45 which is earlier than usual. Dolores took this photo of me before I took off. Timothy and Ashanta are wishing me good luck:)

The cloud base was not really that high in the beginning: only about 1400 meters above the airfield. Later it rose up to about 1800 meters. The wind was cooperative, but not very strong: my Compeo showed the wind five to fifteen kilometers per hour, usually around ten. There were clouds, but only during the first half of the flight. I was flying and doubting if I can make it:) I just wanted to beat my personal best which was 194 kilometers after the Forbes competition of 2010.

Physically it was quite hard to fly for so long. Mentally I just really wanted to make goal. Also the example of Julia and her long flight in Forbes last year gave me an inspiration: that meant that everything is possible:)! I flew most of the time alone, but in the second part of the flight I often met a few pilots in the thermals. After thermaling together we flew off in different directions, lost each other, but later surprisingly met each other again. The pilot I met more often than anybody else was Jamie. We'd met now and then, off and on, and after the second time I was wondering when I will meet her again and really hoping that she is alright and managed to get up in that lift. And she made goal on her kingposted Litesport - she is a real hero!

And only when I had passed the second turnpoint, which happened after 6 pm already, I realized that it is only sixty kilometers left to goal, which means that I have already made my personal best and also that it is really possible to make goal now. You know, it's these kind of moments, when after hard flight you realize that you are gonna make goal, that you want to cry from happiness:)

And I made it:) I made this goal in Hay:)! The real distance we flew was 308 kilometers (because the fist turnpoint had 20 kilometers radius).

308 kilometers! Three hundred eight:) I am lost for words! That was a distance:)! I really like this number:) From the moment of launch to the moment of landing I flew for seven and a half hours, which is also my personal best:)

They said, that this task was the longest ever at Forbes, the 2nd longest ever in Australia, and the 3rd longest ever in the world. Better yet, 29 of the 60 participants in the Forbes Flatland Competion made goal! 29! You should have seen all those pilots:) There was no any other place in the world in that moment, where you would find more happiness than at the goal field in Hay:)

Michael flew 254 kilometers, which is also a lot! Many pilots set their personal bests. Vicki asked to write their names down. Here is this long long list:):

Forbes - Task 2 - 148 km
This was our 148 km task:И я долетела до цели:) Ура:) После того, как я пару раз накосячила в самом начале и чуть не села оба раза, я уже решила, что по всей справедливости заслуживаю бомбаута.
And I made goal:) Yeehaw! After I made a few mistakes in the very begining, I thought that I fairly deserved landing out. But I just spent quite a long time fixing my mistakes and progressed slowly but still made goal:)

Forbes - Task 1 - 168 km triangle
168km triangle, first leg against the wind. I was in the air for six hours including 1.5 hour before the first start gate. Six hours! I was tired. Dead tired. I really wanted to make goal. And I didn't:(
Results will be HERE soon.

Forbes - Craig Worth Open - Day 1 - Stopped & Canceled
1) за моей спиной не схопнулась стена дождей (тучи, молнии, очень впечатляюще, когда ты уже проскочил!);
2) таск не застопили после 45 минут после первого гейта = отменили;
I was the second pilot at goal today:)!
Sounds cool, if you didn't know that
1) there was an opaque wall of heavy rain behind my back (clouds, lightning; very impressive, when you have passed it already!)
2) the task was stopped within 45 minutes after the first start gate.
3) after the task was stopped, I basicly flew straight to the goal which was far enough from all the rain. Some pilots flew the entire route without knowing that task was stopped.
1) за моей спиной не схопнулась стена дождей (тучи, молнии, очень впечатляюще, когда ты уже проскочил!);
2) таск не застопили после 45 минут после первого гейта = отменили;

This was our task: 113 kilometers with two turnpoints. The rain was around the first turnpoint.

Cloudbase foundation
This is an American organization created by hangglider and paraglider pilots, which raises money for needy children around the world. The organizers have come up with an interesting idea how to raise money during hanggliding competitions. A foundation representative fabricates teams of six people from the list of competing pilots in a way that gives all the teams more or less the same total level of ability. And then he starts accepting bids on which team will win. He was reading the list of pilots in the team, praising them, and "selling" the team to the person who offers the most. For example, a team with Attila in it began to sell immediately for $ 300. Well, later the price increased. As a result, each team has its "owner". All bets were finalized before the first task. In the end of the competition, the "owner" of the winning team gets half of all the money collected, with the rest going to programs that help children in poor countries where we fly.

Airspace
This is the most unpleasant part. Now there is restricted airspace even in the Forbes area. And quite a few! Almost in every direction where we fly. Moreover, the radius of each is 18.54 kilometers. In some of them almost nobody flies at all: just a village with an old airfield nobody takes care of. But the airport has a certain status, which means we can not go there! Moreover, the owners themselves don't monitor airfields, they just can't, especially with a periphery of 18 km. But the organizers of the competition consider it necessary to reduce points of pilots who fly in the airspace. I don't quite understand - why? The owners of aerodromes didn't ask for this. You can simply make a task around all airspaces - this is what the organizers are supposed to do in my opinion (and they do so far). If by chance a pilot got lost and flew half of kilometer into the airspace - nobody would see that and nobody could prove that.
In general, I personally do not agree with the policing and using of more stringent regulations than required.

And yet for three days at Forbes Jazz Festival is held. Directly opposite our head quarters you can hear beautiful music! And soon here will be held a famous Elvis Presley festival - people from across the country come dressed up as Elvis and Priscilla (probably just matured and thicker). They usually have about one thousand participants! There are contests, "who looks more like Elvis" and "who sings more like Elvis." Maybe, we should dress up as well:)?

That's all news from the front for the moment. Keep in touch:) The weather forecast is promising rain for tomorrow. Wish us a good weather pleeease:)!

Forbes - More Practicing
We fly. And then fly again. I don't have much time to write even! I'll post only a few more photos with some captions.
We didn't fly really far (we would need to have a driver for that), but we flew around, we flew with the wind and against the wind. The temperature is 40C on the ground, but in the air it is nice and cool. Once Gerolf's car broke down and we came back home with the tow truck. Another time three of us were flying a task, and I forgot to turn on my radio and connect it to my headset. I ended up flying half an hour with the radio in my teeth, before I got a bit higher to put everything on its place. Yeah, I tell you, it feels really good to be here!:)
Tomorrow is the first day of the competition!
Ah, and...
Happy New Year!!!
I wish you all lots of luck, happiness and warmth this year:)!
