For pilots who are thinking now as I am: "Wish I were there", - it seems that sometimes we need to not just want something, but to also do something about it, as well:)

Australia day

День Австралии...или Первый раз доске...или Еще один день в Раю:)

...or Surf Riding for the First Time...or One More Day in Paradise:)

День Австралии, везде толпы народу, даже в Стэнвелл фиг пробьешься. И ведь поехали за 30 км севернее Сиднея, на Palm beach, где друзья-швейцарцы остановились у Ian'а. А Ian, как и все нормальные австралийцы, сёрфер. С кучей досок.

Australia day, thousands of people everywhere. It would have been hard to set up the glider in Stanwell... So we went to Palm beach which is 30 km to the North of Sydney. My Swiss friends are staying there at Ian's house. And Ian is a surfer, like every Australian, I suppose:) And he's got a lot of boards:)

И все как с лыжами в свое время: думала не понравится.

For me it was like with skiing before: I was thinking I am not gonna really like it.

Представьте, провести ЧАС ЗА ЧАСОМ в воде, чтобы несколько секунд поскользить на волне о_О. Зато как это клево стоять на доске (и не падать:)!) и скользить на гребне волны очень-очень-очень быстро:)

Just imagine, you have to spend HOURS in the water just for a few seconds of riding on a wave crest o_O. But! It is sooo exciting to stand on a board (without falling!) and slide down the face of a wave very very fast:)

Мне повезло: был инструктор - Ian, была доска, была "учебная погода" и была хорошая компания:)

I was lucky: I've got an instructor - Ian, I've got a surfboard, we've got "beginner's weather conditions" and it was a really nice company:)

Bogong - Day 7 - canceled

Да, седьмой день соревнований в Богонге тоже был отменен из-за сильного ветра. Непогода нынче в моде... На завтра вроде получше прогноз.

Yes, the seventh day of Bogong competition was canceled as well. Strong winds... The forecast promises the better weather conditions for tomorrow...

Kangaroo

Вообще, проще и чаще всего можно видеть кенгуру просто проехавшись по дорогам немного в глубинке в сумерки. Эти безбашенные животные сидят вдоль дороги и выскакивают на свет фар. И тогда становится не до фотоаппарата, тогда пытаешься спасти кенгуру и машину:)

Вот что удалось заснять:)

Actually, the easiest way to see a kangaroo is just to drive somewhere inland in the dusk. These crazy animals sit along the road and jump in front of the car to the headlight. And then you usually don't have a time for taking pictures - all you do is try to save the kangaroo and the car:)

А в Челябинске тем временем зима. Много снега и морозы. Снег это хорошо. Но в морозы как-то не хочется... А надо. Скоро уже домой... Без спусков не было бы подъемов, это правда.

It is a real winter in Chelyabinsk in the mean time. A lot of snow and frost. I like snow, but I don't really want to dip into the freezing russian winter... But I need to. I'll go home quite soon...Yes, without "down" it would be impossible to have "up".

Bogong - Day 6 - canceled

Я сейчас в Сиднее. Работаю. А тем временем пилоты в Богонге не сдаются. Несмотря на плохие прогнозы все равно заезжают на старт, собирают дельтапланы и только потом отменяют день.

I am in Sydney now. Working. In the meantime pilots in Bogong don't give up. Despite the bad forecast they go to the launch, set up the gliders and only then cancel the day.

Bogong - Day 5 - canceled

Ветра становятся все сильнее, брифинги становятся все дольше... Как нам везло с погодой в Форбсе, так нам не везет с погодой в Богонге...

Прогноз на следующие дни не сильно радостный, я возвращаюсь в Сидней.

Как минимум пилотов шесть так же сдаются и возвращаются на побережье, где хотя бы можно полетать в Стэнвелле и спокойно поработать.

The winds are getting stronger, the briefings are getting longer and longer... As much as we were lucky with the weather conditions in Forbes, we are unlucky now in Bogong...

The forecast is not very promising for the rest of the week, so I decided to come back to Sydney.

At least six pilots also gave up and came back to the coast, where you can fly in the sea breeze.

Bogong - Day 4

Самая холодная зима в моей жизни была в Богонге, Австралии, в середине января:)

Тут действительно очень холодно по ночам. Очччччччень. Идея жить в палатках была, прямо скажем, не очень. Замерзла, простыла и пропустила день. А день наконец-то был лётный!

The coldest winter I ever experienced was in Bogong, Australia, in the middle of January:)
It is really cold at night-time here. Really. The idea to stay in the tents was not really good. I got cold and skipped the first flyable day, when we finally had a task!

С утра обещали немного слишком сильный ветер. Но верить прогнозу никто особо не хотел, потому что уже неделю не летаем. Заехали на старт. Над стартом облака быстро несутся. Выглядит опасно. Но никто не хочет верить облакам, потому что уже неделю не летаем. Поставили таск - 100 км туда-сюда вдоль хребта. Старт открыт, никто не торопиться в эту турбуляку лезть. Но в итоге стадным инстинктом летят все. Потому что таск поставлен, потому что уже неделю не летаем. Кто-то решает, что ему не в удовольствие летать в этой "стиральной машинке" и скручивает на посадку. Кто-то бомбится по пути. Остальные финишируют. Говорят, сверху было 60 км/ч ветер, а это горы, это не равнина. Это совсем не приятно. Но топ-пилоты справляются. А те, кто принимают решение о посадке, так и не знают, стоило ли садиться. С точки зрения безопасности - стоило. Но столько народу финишировало же! Наверное, надо было забить на безопасность и лететь?...

The forecast promised a little bit too strong of winds. But nobody wanted to believe in the bad forecast, because we haven't been flying for a week already. We got to Emu-launch. Clouds above the take-off moved really fast and looked turbulent. But nobody wanted to believe their eyes, because we haven't been flying for a week already. They set a 100 km task back and forth along the ridge. Start is open. Nobody hurries to fly in such a washing machine. But anyway finally everybody got in the air. The herd instinct? Or just that we haven't been flying for a week already. A few pilots decided not to fly in these turbulent conditions and flew directly to the landing field. A few pilots bombed out in the begining. Other pilots made goal. They measured 60 km/h winds up there. And it is a mountain area, not a flatland one. Not pleasant conditions at all. But top-pilots can fly with such conditions. Those who decided to land feel not really confident and content about their decision. On the one hand they landed for safety reasons, on the other hand so many pilots made goal! Maybe they needed to forget about safety and fly as well?

Джонни выиграл день, единственный пока день Богонга. А в Юльку стреляли в воздухе. Представьте! Крутила метров 300 над какой-то фермой, и в нее начали стрелять. Только пули мимо свистели. Ужас! Вспоминается анекдот про чукчу, которой стрелял и стрелял в большую птицу "дельтаплана", пока она человека не отпустила...

Jonny won the task, which was the only one in this competition so far. Yulia got shot at in the air! Can you imagine?! She was thermaling 300 meters above a farm when she heard shots and the whizz of bullets. Horrible! It reminded me a joke about Chukchi man, who was shooting at the huge bird with the strange name "hangglider" until the bird let go of a man which he was holding onto...

Bogong - Bulls

Быки тут, конечно, огромные. Страшно представить, когда такая махина за тобой гонится о_О. Вспоминаются Юлькины рассказы за прошлый год. Брррр:)

Bulls are really huge here. It is scary to imagine that such a monster could chase you at the landing field o_O. Just remembered Yulia's story from last year. Brrrrrrr:)

Bogong - Bike Riding

Дни отдыха - самые опасные дни в дельтапланеризме.

На горных велосипедах по эвкалиптовому лесу, крутым спускам и бездорожью.

Bogong - Day 2 & 3 - canceled

Второй и третий дни были отменены из-за сильного ветра.
The second and the third days were canceled because of the strong winds.

Первый день отменен. Сильный ветер. Вот они какие - Mountain Beauty...

Ура:) Новое место:) Богонг, штат Виктория, Австралия. Лесистые горки, красивые пейзажи и гораздо прохладнее по ночам. Завтра тренировачный день. Приключения продолжаются:)

Мои результаты не ахти, но я тут очень многому научилась. Все и не перечислишь. Пожалуй, одно из главных - это само отношение. Когда в полете ты говоришь себе: ну всего-то сто км осталось! А еще я сделала все свои личные рекорды.

My results are not good at all. But I learned a lot. One of the most important things is the new attitude - when you think during the flight: "come on, only one hundred kilometers left!" And I did all my personal bests meanwhile.

И не правда, что тут просто все всегда удуваются по ветру, поэтому такие длинные налеты. Нет. Из девяти летных дней мы удувались только один раз. Остальные разы мы летали с возвращением, или треугольники, или с боковым.

And it is not true, that they fly long distances just drifting with the winds. No. Only one of ten days we flew out with the wind. All the others flights we made triangles and out-and-return tasks.

Говорят, Форбс был необычен в этом году. Из-за глобальных дождей, прошедших тут перед соревнованиями, Форбс выглядит почти как Флорида - зеленый и милый.

They said Forbes was quite unusual this time. The area looks more like Florida - green and soft - after all this heavy rains before the competition.

В общем, мне тут понравилось. Хочу вернуться сюда еще!

Altogether, I really liked this competition. I definitely would want to come back!

Forbes - Day 10 - canceled

Десятый день после девяти летных дней. Погода с утра обещала быть летабельной, но, возможно, не очень безопасной. Очень жарко + сильноватый ветер = хорррошие такие смерчи. Уже вчера многие буксировки безопасными не назвать. Да и устали пилоты. Долго думали и все же отменили таск.

Tenth day after nine flying days. The weather conditions looked flyable, but not very safe, probably. Very very very hot + quite strong winds = quite strong dust devils and gusts. Even yesterday not all the aerotowing was safe. And a lot of pilots are tired. They was thinking for a while and then decided to cancel the day.

После чего мы с Юлькой поехали на аэродром, потому что она хотела попробовать мой Лайтспид. Взлетала она и садилась между буквально между смерчей. Смерчи огромные, быстрые, энергичные, пыльные. Когда потом быстро-быстро разбирали аппарат, прям через нас прошел смерч. Совершенно чудом удержали, кучу народу навалилось, уже не верили, что крыл выживет. Все закончилось хорошо для нас, но не для драгонфлая, который был приподнят смерчом и обрушен на землю, что-то хорошенько сломав на несколько штук баксов. Очень сильные и частые смерчи. Хорошо, что таск отменен.

Then Yulia and I went to the airfield, because she was really desperate to try my Litespeed. She took off and landed twice between dust devils. The dust devils were really strong, fast, dusty and energetic. One of the dust devils came through my glider exactly when we were breaking it down. That was really scary. At one stage we thought we're gonna lose the glider. In the end my glider was ok, but one of the dragonflies was lifted up and then dropped down, and got damage for a few thousands dollars:(((. Yes, there was really strong dust devils there. We were really glad that the task was canceled.

А Юльке, кстати, Лайтспид очень понравился. Очень хорошо буксируется, очень легко садиться, очень легко летает и быстро набирает скорость:) Качества наших аппаратов мы не сравнивали еще.

By the way, Julia really liked my Litespeed. It is very easy to tow, very easy to land, very easy to handle and to fly, and very easy to speed up:) We didn't compare perfomance yet.

А потом все ломанулись в бассейн - единственное место, где можно пережить этот жаркий день - больше 40 градусов жара.

Then we all went to swimming pool, because it is only a place where you could survive with such a heat: more than 40 degrees.

Вечером награждение, а завтра с утра мы выдвигаемся в Богонг!

Tonight it's gonna be a presentation and tomorrow morning we leave for Bogong:)!
